Date ideas in London: choose your kind of plan

Five indoor dates, with the activity cost for two, booking catches and a reason to choose each.

By The Cheeky Hack · Wednesday, 7 October 2026 · 7 min read

Choose something you both want to do, then agree the budget for the two of you. These five indoor dates range from a free museum visit to making pottery or solving an escape room together.

Checked 7 October 2026 against venue information. These are researched suggestions, not a claim that we attended. Prices below cover the activity for two adults; food, drinks and travel are extra. Check your actual date before booking.

Pick your kind of date

Explore Sir John Soane's Museum

Choose this for: a daytime date exploring an architect's former home and collection. A free visit gives you something to discover together without a prepaid session.

Activity cost for two: £0 for general entry. Paid tours are separate.

Where and when: 13 Lincoln's Inn Fields, WC2A 3BP, near Holborn. Normally Wednesday–Sunday, 10am–5pm; closed Monday and Tuesday except bank holidays. Last admission is usually 4.30pm, but capacity can mean an earlier cut-off.

Booking catch: walk-in entry needs no advance booking, but you may have to queue. Narrow rooms and limited numbers mean entry is not guaranteed at your preferred time. Avoid large bags; filming, flash and large cameras are prohibited. Use the museum's access guidance for your needs.

Extend the plan: leave time for a separately budgeted coffee or meal around Holborn. Agree that afterwards, rather than booking a tight restaurant slot before you know the queue.

Check Soane opening times, visitor rules and access.

Play board games at Draughts

Choose this for: a date where a game gives you a shared task. Ask staff to suggest something for two players instead of arriving with a complicated game to learn.

Activity cost for two: £15.90 midweek before 4pm, or £19.90 for midweek evenings, weekends and bank holidays. That is two adult gaming fees; food and drinks cost extra. Gaming lasts up to three hours, subject to availability.

Where: Waterloo or Stratford. Pick the location that suits both journeys and reserve a table through the venue.

Booking catch: this is a bar setting, so do not expect silence or an alcohol-free venue. You cannot bring your own food or drinks. Check the location's menu before agreeing a total date budget.

Extend the plan: food and drinks are available at the venue, with their own prices. Staying put can be simpler than organising a second stop.

Check Draughts prices, locations and booking.

Play retro games at Power Up

Choose this for: a playful date comparing childhood favourites or trying multiplayer games. Adults can visit; daytime sessions also welcome families.

Activity cost for two: day passes start at £10 each, so the advertised starting total is £20. Prices vary by date and slot; confirm both tickets in the live booking route. This is a separate paid experience, not included in free Science Museum admission.

Where and when: Science Museum, Exhibition Road, South Kensington, SW7 2DD, level -1. Power Up normally opens daily, 10am–5.30pm. Allow around 90 minutes as the museum suggests; day-pass visitors can stay longer.

Booking catch: book museum admission and Power Up through the official route. Tickets on the door are not guaranteed. Daytime is not adults-only, and re-entry can require a wait at busy times. Separate adults-only evenings have their own dates, tickets and conditions.

Extend the plan: use the museum's free galleries before or after, within museum hours. Food is a separate cost.

Check Power Up prices, ticket requirements and booking.

Paint pottery at Art4Fun

Choose this for: a creative date where you each decorate something, giving you an activity to focus on alongside the conversation.

Activity cost for two: each person pays a £6 studio fee plus their ceramic. Using the pricing page's mugs from £19.50, two mugs plus two studio fees come to £51. That is an example, not the minimum for every item. Materials, glazing and firing are included in the studio fee.

Where: 172 West End Lane, West Hampstead, NW6 1SD. Reserve a table through the studio and confirm the session arrangements.

Booking catch: agree the item budget before choosing. Your pieces need firing and will not be ready to take home that day; ask for the current collection time, especially if you are visiting London briefly.

Extend the plan: leave time for a separate café stop around West End Lane if you both want one. Its bill is not included in pottery costs.

Check Art4Fun item prices and reserve a table.

Solve an escape room at clueQuest

Choose this for: two people who both enjoy puzzles and want teamwork to be the main activity. Check the mission difficulty before committing, particularly if one of you has never played.

Activity cost for two: the FAQ lists £31.99 off-peak or £36.99 peak per person for teams of three or more, then adds £5 per person for pairs on weekdays or £10 on weekends. An off-peak weekday pair therefore totals £73.98; a peak weekday pair totals £83.98, and a peak weekend pair £93.98. Seasonal games and IAMAI have different pricing; check the exact mission and slot.

Where: 169–171 Caledonian Road, N1 0SL, near King's Cross. Choose a mission that permits two players and check its access requirements.

Booking catch: the headline group price is not the price for a couple. Match the booking to two players, read cancellation terms and follow the venue's arrival instructions.

Extend the plan: a separately budgeted meal around King's Cross can follow the game. Allow for the full booking and briefing time rather than just puzzle time.

Check clueQuest's current pricing and mission FAQs and choose a mission and slot.

Make the date easy to agree

Send two options with the activity total for both of you, the area and the booking catch. Agree whether you are adding a meal before paying. A short museum visit offers a flexible first-date starting point; a prepaid escape room makes more sense when you already know you both want that activity. These are editorial suggestions, not guarantees about atmosphere or how a date will go.

All five main activities are indoors, but travelling between stops and waiting outside can still involve rain. Check access with the venue for the specific room or session. Do not assume every room works for every mobility, sensory or other access need.

Common date-planning questions

Which date here costs nothing to enter?

General entry at Sir John Soane's Museum is free. Travel, a meal and any paid tour are separate. Check opening hours and allow for a queue.

Which activity costs under £20 for two?

Draughts gaming admission totals £15.90 off-peak or £19.90 peak for two adults, before food and drinks. Power Up starts at £20 for two, with variable prices; it is not an under-£20 guarantee.

Are these dates without drinking?

The museum, gaming gallery, pottery and escape room centre on activities rather than alcohol. Draughts is a bar with board games. An activity-led date does not guarantee an alcohol-free setting.

Can I book these at the last minute?

Only the venue can confirm availability. Soane is normally walk-in, with possible queues. For the paid activities, use the live booking route and check the exact time, two-person total and cancellation terms before paying.
