Start with your activity budget and the people coming. These five indoor plans keep the costs and booking catches together.

Checked 7 October 2026 against venue information. Researched recommendations; check the venue for your date, price and availability.

Pick your kind of birthday

Board games at Draughts

Choose this for: friends who want an activity around a table, with staff to suggest games and explain the rules.

Activity cost: £7.95 per adult midweek before 4pm; £9.95 for midweek evenings, weekends and bank holidays. Gaming lasts up to three hours, subject to availability. Food and drinks cost extra.

Where and group rules: Waterloo or Stratford. Reserve a table through the venue; groups of 15 or more need an enquiry and may need a deposit or advance payment.

Before booking: outside food and drinks are prohibited. Confirm any birthday cake exception directly. Noise levels are not guaranteed.

Check Draughts prices, group rules and booking.

Paint pottery at Art4Fun

Choose this for: a creative birthday where everyone decorates their own keepsake, rather than watching someone else perform.

Activity cost: £6 studio fee per person, plus your chosen ceramic. The pricing page lists mugs from £19.50, so that example totals £25.50 per person. This is not a universal minimum: choose your item and confirm its price first. Materials, glazing and firing are included in the studio fee.

Where and group rules: 172 West End Lane, West Hampstead, NW6 1SD. Reserve a table; contact the studio for a larger birthday group and confirm seating and session arrangements.

Before booking: finished pieces need firing, so they will not be ready to take home that day. Ask for the current collection time. Cake and outside-food arrangements need confirmation.

Check pottery prices and reserve or enquire about an adult birthday.

An escape room at clueQuest

Choose this for: a birthday built around teamwork and puzzles, with no need to make drinking the main activity.

Activity cost: £31.99 per person off-peak or £36.99 at peak times for teams of three or more. Teams of two pay an extra £5 per person on weekdays or £10 on weekends; seasonal missions may cost more.

Where and group rules: 169–171 Caledonian Road, N1 0SL, near King's Cross. Larger parties split across rooms; player limits depend on the mission. Match the room to your actual group before booking.

Before booking: cake and food are not allowed in the escape rooms or briefing area. A separate function space can be hired for a celebration afterwards; that is an additional booking. Birthday packages include different extras, so compare the package with a game-only visit.

Darts at Flight Club Victoria

Choose this for: friends who want multiplayer competition followed by food, with an explicit route for bringing birthday cake.

Activity cost: check the darts price for your London slot. The Victoria birthday page lists a £40 per person food-and-drink package that excludes darts. Do not treat that package price as the total bill.

Where and group rules: 6 Sir Simon Milton Square, SW1E 5DJ. Adult darts bookings need at least four guests after 4pm on Monday and Tuesday, or six after 4pm Wednesday–Friday and all day Saturday. December requires six every day. Check the booking rules for your group and date.

Before booking: the venue allows birthday cake; arrange an early drop-off with reception. Balloons must stay away from the darts board. For an adult celebration, bring ID if needed under the venue's age policy.

Check Victoria birthday options and group and age rules.

Culture at Wellcome Collection

Choose this for: a daytime birthday with art, health and human stories to explore, especially if you want the main activity to cost nothing. Pair it with a separately budgeted lunch rather than paying for a birthday package.

Activity cost: permanent and temporary exhibitions are free. Café purchases are extra; some events have their own arrangements.

Where and timing: 183 Euston Road, NW1 2BE. Galleries and the Reading Room currently open Tuesday–Sunday, 10am–6pm, and are closed on Monday. The library and café have different hours.

Before going: this is a public museum visit, not a private party booking. Contact the venue about a group visit or tour. Check the current exhibition programme and any event-specific booking requirement.

Plan a Wellcome visit, check opening times and group arrangements.

Make the group plan easier

Agree the activity budget first, then allow separately for food, drinks and travel. Ask who can definitely attend before paying a deposit. Check cancellation terms and whether everyone has to choose the same package. A pair, a group of six and a group of fifteen can face different booking rules at the same venue.

For access needs, use the venue's own guidance and confirm that the exact room or activity works for your group before paying. A wheelchair-accessible building does not automatically make every activity suitable.

If you want a one-off birthday outing instead, browse this weekend's London events. For plans further away, try book-ahead events. Check that the event date actually matches the birthday.

Common birthday questions

What can I do for a birthday in London on a budget?

Start with a free Wellcome exhibition or the Draughts gaming fee under £10. Those are activity costs: food, drinks and any travel still need a budget. A free entry route is not a free birthday package.

Can I bring a birthday cake?

Flight Club Victoria explicitly allows birthday cake. Draughts prohibits outside food, while clueQuest requires a separate function-space arrangement for cake or food. Confirm directly with Art4Fun before taking cake.

Which birthday plans work without making alcohol the focus?

Pottery painting, an escape room or a Wellcome visit centre on making, solving or exploring. Draughts and Flight Club are bars; choosing an activity there does not mean the venue is alcohol-free.

Are these options available on my birthday?

Only the venue can confirm availability for your date, group and activity. Check the live booking route; a published guide is not a reserved space.
