God's Own Junkyard is a warehouse in Walthamstow stuffed with 1,500 handmade neon signs and it's free to walk into. Most of them were made by the late Chris Bracey, who built signs for Soho strip clubs and Hollywood films, Batman, Kingsman, Eyes Wide Shut. Now they all live in one room together, buzzing at full power.
What's inside
Free entry to the main warehouse. Every wall is signs. Vintage Soho stuff, film props, neon sculptures, religious icons, custom commissions. Some of it is for sale, prices climb into the thousands for the bigger pieces, smaller bits start around £80. The gift shop is the buyable section.
The Rolling Scones Cafe is inside the warehouse. Coffee, cakes, full breakfast, you sit under the signs while you eat. It's not a quick stop, you'll lose forty minutes once the cafe gets you.
How to get there
1. Walthamstow Central tube on the Victoria line, also Overground. 2. 12-15 minute walk south through the Ravenswood Industrial Estate. Not the prettiest route, but it's safe. 3. Address is Unit 12, Ravenswood Industrial Estate, Shernhall Street, Walthamstow E17 9HQ. 4. Walk in, no booking, no entry fee. 5. Check godsownjunkyard.co.uk for any private hire closures, they do bookings Mon-Thurs.
What's worth knowing
The lighting is the point. Every sign is hand-blown glass tube, gas-filled, transformer-buzzing real neon, not LED. That's why they flicker, hum, and look completely different on your camera vs in person.
The cafe is genuinely good. Cream tea is around £8, full breakfast around £12, both made on site. It's not a tourist trap that overcharges because the room is famous.
Weekends only is the hard rule, Friday 11am-10pm, Saturday 11am-10pm, Sunday 11am-6pm. Mid-week the warehouse is closed to the public.
Most signs in the main hall aren't for sale, the labels show "made for X film". The gift shop on the side is where the actual buyable stock lives.
