Free Japanese Garden in West London: Kyoto Garden, Holland Park
Tiered waterfall, koi pond, free entry. Daily 7:30am to dusk in Holland Park.
Kyoto Garden in Holland Park is a full Japanese garden with a tiered waterfall feeding a koi pond, stone lanterns, Japanese maples, and winding cobbled paths. It's free, open daily, and most West London locals haven't actually been.
What's there
Tiered central waterfall, three drops, feeding a pond stocked with koi carp. Stone lanterns scattered through, Japanese maple trees that turn red in autumn, manicured shrubs and winding cobbled paths. The whole garden takes 20 minutes to walk through, longer if you sit by the pond.
Address: Holland Park, Kensington High Street side, London W11 4UA. Open daily, 7:30am until 30 minutes before dusk.
How to get there
1. Holland Park tube (Central line) is closest, five minutes' walk to the park entrance. 2. Or Notting Hill Gate (Central, Circle, District), seven minutes. 3. Or Kensington High Street (Circle, District), 10 minutes. 4. Enter Holland Park through the main gates on Holland Park Avenue. 5. Head north and uphill towards the Kyoto Garden sign. It's the fenced Japanese section. 6. Walk in. No tickets, no booking.
What's worth knowing
Early morning or just before dusk are the call. The maples glow at sunset, the koi are calm, and the cobbled paths are empty. Avoid 11am-3pm on summer weekends, it gets Insta-busy and the paths jam.
Peacocks roam free outside the Kyoto Garden fence. Don't feed them, park rules, they're not yours to interact with.
The unfenced bridge by the main waterfall has uneven cobbles. Watch your step in the wet, especially if you're carrying a camera.
Pair it with the Holland Park cafe or Deliciously Ella in the park for £4.50 avocado toast after. Beats most Notting Hill brunch spots and saves you the walk down to High Street.
The garden gets less attention than the Roof Garden at Kensington High Street, which is paid and indoor. Kyoto Garden is the better one and it's free.
No dogs allowed in the Kyoto Garden specifically. Wider Holland Park is fine on lead.
