Three London spots that don't feel like London. One free, two paid, all genuinely worth the trip if you need a proper break from the Tube and the crowds.

What you get

Kyoto Garden in Holland Park, completely free, daily 7:30am to dusk. Japanese-style with bamboo, koi pond, cherry trees, a tiered waterfall. W8 6LU, Holland Park or Kensington High Street tube.

Eltham Palace, Art Deco mansion grafted onto medieval ruins, £17 adult, £10 child, open 10am-5pm daily (last entry 4pm). SE9 5QE, 20 minutes from London Bridge on Southeastern.

Dennis Severs' House, candlelit immersive house tour in a recreated 18th-century Spitalfields home, £16 evenings, Wed-Sun 5pm-9pm. 18 Folgate Street, E1 6BX, Liverpool Street tube.

How to do each one

1. Kyoto Garden: Holland Park entrance off Holland Park Avenue. Walk in, head up to the northwest corner. Free. 2. Eltham Palace: Book at english-heritage.org.uk. Train from London Bridge to Falconwood, 10-minute walk. 3. Dennis Severs': Tickets at dennissevershouse.co.uk. Liverpool Street tube, five-minute walk. Pick "Silent Night" tours if you want the proper experience.

What's worth knowing

Kyoto Garden is the free one and the easiest. Best before 10am on a weekday, the peacocks roam, the koi are still, and you'll have the place to yourself. Don't feed the peacocks, they're park birds not yours. Avoid summer weekends, it gets Insta-busy.

Eltham Palace is the most under-rated paid attraction in London. The Art Deco interior is intact, glass dome, marble bath, mahogany dining room. Pair with the bakery on site, cream teas around £8, better than most palace cafes.

Dennis Severs' House isn't a museum, it's a still-life drama. You walk through eleven rooms in candlelight, each set as if the Huguenot silk weaver family has just stepped out. "Silent Night" tours mean no talking allowed, you go alone, takes about 45 minutes. Best in winter for the atmosphere, the cold and the candles do the work.

All three are at their best on weekdays. Eltham especially, the audio guide is naff but the rooms speak for themselves once you ignore it.

FAQ

Are they suitable for kids? Kyoto Garden yes. Eltham yes. Dennis Severs' House: 12+ recommended, the silent format is hard for younger kids.

Best one if I've only got one? Free option, Kyoto. Paid, Eltham for the wow factor, Dennis Severs' for something completely different.

Can I combine them in a day? Kyoto + Dennis Severs' in one day works. Eltham needs its own afternoon.

What about cafes? Kyoto has Deliciously Ella in the park, £4.50 avocado toast. Eltham has cream teas. Dennis Severs' has nothing, eat before.
