Free museums, £10 West End tickets, secret rooftop gardens, and the £15 lunches that beat anywhere central.
Free museums, £10 West End tickets, secret rooftop gardens, and the £15 lunches that beat anywhere central.
- Catch: Weekends and school holidays are absolutely rammed.
Right, if you're paying full price for anything in London this month, we need to have a chat.
There's a stack of proper free things most people miss, world-class museums with zero entry fee, parks that'll save you a tenner on a walk, and markets where you can eat for under a fiver. The catch? Everyone finds out about them at the same time, and weekends get rammed. But if you know when to go and what to skip, you'll beat the crowds and actually enjoy them.
What you get
The British Museum, National Gallery, and Tate Modern are all free to enter for their permanent collections. That's the Rosetta Stone, the Van Goghs, and the Turbine Hall installations costing you absolutely nothing. British Museum: Great Russell St, WC1B 3DG (Tottenham Court Road tube). National Gallery: Trafalgar Square, WC2N 5DN (Charing Cross tube). Tate Modern: Bankside, SE1 9TG (Blackfriars tube). All open 10am-6pm daily. Some special exhibitions charge, usually £15-20, but the main collections are always free. No booking needed. Just walk in.
Hyde Park is open dawn to dusk, and April's the month to go, cherry blossoms are peaking, the grass is actually green, and it costs you nothing. London W2 2UH (Hyde Park Corner or Marble Arch tube). Borough Market runs weekends and is where you can graze for free. Seriously, most stalls give proper samples. 8 Southwark St, SE1 1TL (London Bridge tube).
How to get it
1. Check the venue website before you go, they list crowd updates and special closures. 2. Go on a weekday morning if you can. Tuesday to Thursday, 10am-noon, is your sweet spot. Weekends are tourist central. 3. For museums, allow at least two hours. Don't try to "do" the British Museum in 90 minutes, you'll hate it. 4. At Borough Market, arrive by 11am on Saturday. The best samples go by lunchtime. 5. Bring a water bottle to the parks. There's nowhere cheap to buy one.
What the TikTok didn't mention
- Best time to go: Weekday mornings are 70% less crowded than weekends. Seriously. A Tuesday at 10:30am feels like you've got the place to yourself.
- What to skip: The museum gift shops are brutal, £8 for a pencil. The café prices are worse. Eat before you go.
- The combo that works: Tate Modern in the morning, lunch at Borough Market (£5-8 for proper food), then walk the South Bank in the afternoon. Costs you nothing after lunch.
The catch
Weekends and school holidays are absolutely rammed. I've queued 45 minutes just to get into the National Gallery on a Saturday. The museums get so packed that you can't actually look at anything properly, you're just moving bodies.
These aren't budget compromises. They're genuinely good, and they're free, which is why everyone else has worked it out too.
