- Catch: is they're not at every station and Zone 1 is sparse, so knowing where they are saves a search when you need one.
TfL pulled coin-operated toilets out of the network in 2021. 155 stations across the Underground, Elizabeth line, Overground, Trams, and some Thameslink stops now have free toilets. The catch is they're not at every station and Zone 1 is sparse, so knowing where they are saves a search when you need one.
What's available
Free toilets at 155 TfL-managed stations. Most are inside the gateline, a few sit outside before the gates. No payment, no app, no voucher, just walk in.
Most are open through the day. A few close during quiet periods, usually early morning before staffing.
Accessible toilets are at most major stations, baby-changing facilities at around half the network. The TfL toilets map (tfl.gov.uk/cdn/static/cms/documents/toilets-map.pdf) lists every station with what facilities each has.
How to find one
1. Open the TfL toilets map online before you travel. Or save it offline. 2. Search your station. The map shows: gateline status (inside or outside), accessible status, baby-changing availability. 3. At the station, head to the toilet location shown on the map. 4. If the door is locked, ask staff at the ticket office. They'll let you through, no questions. 5. Use it. Walk out.
What's worth knowing
Zone 1 is the gap. Only four stations inside the gateline have free toilets in central London: Farringdon, Liverpool Street, King's Cross St Pancras, Victoria. If you're at Covent Garden or Leicester Square needing a toilet, you're walking five minutes.
Morden on the Northern Line is the gold standard. Full upgrade, free, accessible, gender-neutral, baby-changing. If you're south, that's the benchmark.
Some stations have closed temporarily. Vauxhall lost its facilities in 2024 for upgrades. Check the map before relying on a specific stop.
Non-TfL facilities inside some stations still charge. Marylebone has Chiltern Railways toilets that are paid. Always ask which ones are the TfL ones before paying anything.
Restaurants and pubs near stations are usually fine if you buy a coffee. Pret and Costa are the safe bets, both have free toilets for customers.
FAQ
Is it really every TfL station? No, 155 out of 270-ish. Most main stations yes. Smaller stops, no.
Are they clean? Variable. Major stations are cleaned hourly. Smaller ones less. Bring hand sanitiser.
What about National Rail stations like Paddington? Different system. National Rail toilets at major termini are usually free now, but a few legacy paid ones still exist. The map only covers TfL-managed stations.
Are they open 24 hours? Most aren't. Track aligns roughly with station opening. First and last hour of operation can be locked.
