The Royal Opera House does something properly mad every Friday at 1pm. They give away free performances. Forty-five minutes of actual opera or ballet in their glass-roofed Paul Hamlyn Hall, performed by proper Royal Opera and Royal Ballet artists. No hidden charges. No "free" that means you've got to buy a £12 coffee. Just free.
What you get
Free entry to a 45-minute lunchtime performance at the Royal Opera House in the Paul Hamlyn Hall, a glass-roofed space inside the main building. You'll see professional singers, dancers, and guest performers doing scaled versions of operas, ballets, or classical pieces. The performances change each week. Location: Bow Street, Covent Garden, London WC2E 9DD. Nearest tube is Covent Garden. The deal runs every Friday at 1:00pm, and it's been going for years.
How to get it
1. Check the Royal Opera House website for the exact dates, they don't run every single Friday, usually twice a month from March through July, though the 2026 schedule might shift. 2. Turn up to either the Bow Street main entrance or the Piazza entrance on the day of the performance. 3. Collect your free entry token at the entrance, it's first come, first served, so arrive 30-40 minutes early if you want to guarantee getting in. 4. Once you've got your token, head into the Paul Hamlyn Hall and find a seat. 5. Watch the performance.
What the TikTok didn't mention
- Get there early. Capacity's limited and they don't take bookings. If you roll up at 12:55pm, you might find the tokens are gone. Thirty to forty minutes early is the safe bet, especially on a Friday when people actually have lunch breaks.
- It's proper opera, not a watered-down version. You're not getting a five-minute clip. It's forty-five minutes of actual performance, usually from something recognisable, Verdi, Puccini, contemporary ballet. The artists aren't students. They're the people who perform in the main theatre.
- Covent Garden's full of restaurants. Grab a bite before the 1pm slot, then catch the performance on a full stomach.
The catch
Admittance is subject to capacity, if you're late, you might not get a token even if you've made the journey. The dates aren't consistent either. They don't run every Friday, so check the official Royal Opera House site before heading to Bow Street.
Tokens go fast, arrive by 12:20pm to be sure.
