There's a proper working farm in the middle of the Isle of Dogs, and it costs you nothing to walk in. Mudchute Park & Farm is 32 acres of sheep, goats, llamas, donkeys, pigs, chickens, peacocks, pheasants, a duck pond, and a riding school, all five minutes from Canary Wharf. If you've ever moaned about London being all glass towers and no green space, this is the antidote.

What you get

Admission to Mudchute Park & Farm is free; you just walk in from Mudchute Park on the Isle of Dogs. They're open daily, but some farm areas close on Mondays, so weekdays are better if you want to see everything. The farm itself is 32 acres with over 100 animals, including a petting zoo, a duck pond, and a riding school. You can grab a £1 animal feed packet if you want to get closer to the animals, but it's optional.

How to get it

1. Head to Mudchute DLR station on the Isle of Dogs; it's literally the closest stop to the farm. 2. Walk through Mudchute Park towards the farm entrance; there's no ticket gate or booking, you just stroll in. 3. Once you're in, follow the signs to the main animal area, the petting zoo, and the duck pond; the layout is obvious and easy to navigate. 4. If you're coming from Canary Wharf, it's about a five-minute walk from the station exit to the park entrance. 5. No app or website booking is needed; you can just turn up and spend as long as you like wandering round.

What the TikTok didn't mention

  • The farm is at its best in the late morning to early afternoon; the animals are more active, and the kids' areas are buzzing without being packed.
  • Skip the expensive snacks from nearby Canary Wharf and bring your own picnic; the green space is perfect for sitting down with a sandwich and watching the animals.
  • You can easily combo this with a walk along the Isle of Dogs or a quick coffee in Canary Wharf; the farm's location makes it a brilliant, cheap half-day out that isn't a budget compromise.

The catch

The big downside is the lease situation; the charity's lease expired in June 2024, and they're still negotiating with Tower Hamlets Council for a long-term renewal. That means the farm is operating without long-term security, and there's a real risk the setup could change if a deal isn't done. It's not a reason not to go, but it's the kind of place you want to visit while you still can.

It's one of the best free days out in London, and the farm beats half the overpriced kids' attractions in terms of space, animals, and views.
